Road to international markets: Music PR in Germany Workshop by Sebastian Król

In this last workshop of HEMI Music Awards phase 1, the 27 nominees of CSEE had the chance to find out how the Music PR process works in Germany.  Sebastian Król, co-founder of Backseat music agency and Funklub platform gave to the nominees an overview featuring fields of media, insights of a campaign and tips on how to get in touch with Music PR agencies.

Sebastian Król is 32 years old and lives in Hamburg. After graduating from the university of Lüneburg with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Król started working at the music agency popup-records. Six years later, in 2017, he founded the label and PR agency Backseat – together with his friend and partner Arne Thamer. Early 2021, he started Fanklub, a new platform for bands and fans which will launch in summer. Sebastian is also a musician himself, releasing music under the alias Karwendel, poetic indie folk in German language.

Backseat is a Hamburg-based music agency founded in 2017 by Sebastian Król and Arne Thamer. We develop individual PR campaigns for releases in the fields of indie, folk, pop and rock. We cover all media fields (radio / print / online / TV) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Currently we support the following bands: Ane Brun, Sticky Fingers, AVEC, Kristofer Åström, The Fratellis, Tiger Lou, John Paul White, Meadows, Hudson Taylor, Lauren Ruth Ward and many more.

In addition to PR activities, Backseat is also active as a label itself. Together with Soulfood & Believe Digital as distribution partner we can distribute our releases worldwide. ROBA Musikverlag supports us in publishing. So far the following bands have released their music on Backseat: Carnival Youth, BRTHR, The Bland, DI-RECT, Jonas Alaska, Of The Valley, Albert Luxus, Jo Goes Hunting, Penny Police, Phototaxis, I’m Not a Blonde, Native, Brett Newski, Echo Me, Grapell, Martin Baltser, Cub & Wolf, Big Fox, Native, SPARKLING, The Cool Quest & The Bad Tones.

Backseat is in charge of the music booking for the NORDEN Festival in Schleswig and the PR for the Rock For People Festival in the Czech Republic. Since 2020 Backseat cooperates with the Czech export office SoundCzech to connect the German and Czech music industry.

In 2021, Sebastian Król and Arne Thamer founded the Fanklub Music FKM GmbH, a new platform for bands and fans: fanklub.com

Fanklub is the new platform for bands and fans!
As a band, you can create your own Fanklub page in no time, free of charge and with no programming skills – as website and app. All basic information such as live dates and videos can be found by everyone free of charge. Fans can access exclusive content such as live streams, news, and raffles by joining your Fanklub, which starts at €1.99 per month. As an all-in-one solution, Fanklub combines the functions of a classic band website with the features of crowdfunding models. Easy to watch, PIN TV is the first ever program of 13 hours non-stop content covering all the angles from the creative & event industry – meeting in one common point – music. The remarkable selection of delegates promises a relevant document of the current times, bringing seriously unharmed and sharp professionalism, cleverly obsessing your focus, despite all the showcases and intelligently spotted humor.

Starting from the basics, the discussions are moving among the hottest topics in the live industry, on the same table with all the domains that are naturally connected to the industry itself. BEN CHALLIS (Glastonbury|UK) is guiding us through the complex relation between the YOUROPE association and the artist agencies, implementation of force majeure clause, ALEX HARDEE (Paradigm|UK), BECKIE SUDGEN (X-Ray|UK), ANDERS WAHREN (Roskilde|DK), EDMOND LENARTH (Electric Castle|RO), STEVE ZAPP (ITB|UK), with their side of the story regarding the new framework defining artist fees and the future line ups, MICHELA MAGAS (Music Tech Fest|SE), driving us into the great unknown world of innovation and music technology, together with CJ CARR (Dadabots|US) as a prodigy of artificial intelligence playing with the music industry tools.

Many countries brought the promoters closer together so CODRUTA VULCU (Artmania|RO), MITJA PREZELJ (GizKos|SI), MARTIN STOYANOV (Loud Concerts|BG), will share their local position as industry towards their governments.

How Europe is acting towards the creative industries directly from WALTER ZAMPIERI (European Comission|BE) and FIONA DEUSS FRANDI (European Commission|BE), and how the local scenes have strengthened their belts with helps of their export offices (Music Export Norway, Sounds Austrialia, Iceland Music Export, Music Estonia, Music Export Poland, Austrian Music Export, Music Export Greece, Italian Export Buiro, La Bureau Export (FR)).
On the other side of their well-known careers, we are sneak peeking with CHRIS ECKMAN (SI/US), BILL GOULD (Faith no more|US), DARKO PERIC (La Casa de Papel), TANA DOUGLAS (first female roadie|UK), MARTIN DRUST (Saint Pauli|DE) and framing a serious selection of masterminds into the Health & Safety piece featuring CHRIS KEMP (MOM Consultancy|UK), MORTEN THERKILDSEN (Roskilde|DK), DARKO FLEGO (SKY Music|RS), MICHAL SLADEK (Pohoda|SK).
Subtitling solutions, why Youtube needs a translation and the importance of it for opening new markets for the artists, directly from the NYC flat of ROBERT SINGERMANN (LYRICFIND|USA), what is the work of a music supervisor, licensing process and what you need to know about the structure, by CONNIE FARR (THINKSYNC|UK).

The big love affair and connection between the event industry and tourism, with some of the most noble projects connecting these two dots: RUUD BERENDS (Eurosonic Noorderslag|NL), ALESSANDRA DI CARRO (Butik|IT), PETER SMIDT (Former ESNS|NL), VEDRAN MENIGA (Pozitivan Ritam|CRO), REMI BRUGGMANN (Montreux Jazz Festival|CH), ZLATANA PAVLOVIC (Lovefest|RS).
What is 2020WHEN and what is sustainable in these unsustainable circumstances? An honest and yet hopeful turnover of the events with NICK HOBBS (Charmenko|TR), FRUZSINA SZEP (GOODLIVE|DE), ALEX STEVENS (DOUR Festival|BE), MAJA STARCEVIC (EXIT Festival|RS), CLAIRE O`NEILL (A Greener Festival|UK), AKOS DOMINUS (Sziget Festival|HU) and how we all laid down into the digital world by DARIO DRASTATA (Impala/Runda|CRO), BRANKO KOMLJENOVIC (Menart|CRO), NIKOLA JOVANOVIC (Runda|RS), JENNIFER MASSET (Spotify|US).

Directly into the source, HARRY TIDSWELL (FANBYTES|UK), how TikTok is now part of any artist career, winning or losing during the dance?

Challenging times behind all of the sequences defining the music industry, catching unprepared lots and lots of sectors including the PR, so we are going through the good times and bad times with NIKKI MCNEILL (Global Publicity|UK), ANDRAS BERTA (EXIT Festival, RS), GIDEON GOTTFRIED (POLLSTAR|DE), ALEX HARTEL (SUMMER BREEZE OPEN AIR|DE).

HEMI at LINECHECK!

On Tuesday, November 17, we’ll be discussing “Social Innovation through Music in Eastern Europe”.

HEMI is going to be present at the online version of Lineckeck Music Meeting and Festival on November 17 at 14:00.

Presented by HEMI – Hub for the Exchange of Music Innovation (in English), this panel will host Georges Perot, Owner & Founder of MESO Music Events / Project Coordinator of HEMI Music Hub and Head of Athens Music Week (GR), Martiina Putnik, Head of International Projects / Music Estonia (EE), Màrton Nàray, Director / Czech Music Export Office (CZ), and Carina Sava, Partner of Mastering the Music Business / Founder & Artist Manager / Watermelon Agency (RO).

The creative industries in Europe’s eastern belt, from Estonia to Greece, have long been somewhat overlooked, wrongfully marginalized because of more than just geographical location. In reality, it is a region that harbors developing societies with digitalized, receptive music listeners and forward-thinking creators.

Nowadays, the contribution through music to a strong and innovative cultural backbone is more important than ever, as it provides strong ties to the rest of the world ensuring that exciting alternative players are allowed to flourish.

We will discuss about different approaches achieved in the eastern belt and will try to answer on the short and long term efficiency of Music contribution in the present, sometimes threatening, social-political environment.

To get more information and tickets, about the Linecheck Music Meeting and Festival (November 17-19), visit: https://www.linecheck.it/

Feasibility of a European Music Observatory: new studies from Music Moves Europe

The European Commission has just published two studies of “Music Moves Europe”.

Under the 2018 Preparatory action on music, the European Commission launched several studies to address the main challenges in the music sector, all aiming to improve the poor data availability, develop a better understanding of the market trends as well as sustainable mechanisms on how to monitor them, and to identify data and funding needs.

Two corresponding studies are now published:

However, we need to note that the data for both studies and their analysis reflects the “pro-Covid-19” situation.

The current crisis has had a profound effect on the music sector, so the issues that these studies bring to light (the lack of data and the funding gaps) make their findings even more important, so that EU and national institutions and policy makers can contribute to the sustainable development of the music sector.

Background

The 2018-2020 Preparatory action “Music Moves Europe: Boosting European diversity and talent” aims primarily to prepare future support for music under the Creative Europe programme (new sectorial action on music).

Over the past three years, the European Commission has launched 7 calls for proposals and 4 calls for tenders to implement the Preparatory action, with a total budget of €7 million. This process and the results achieved will help design the future EU support in the context of the Music Moves Europe initiative, including funding under the Creative Europe programme.

For more information, you can also read about how the EU responds to the coronavirus outbreak in support of the cultural and creative sectors.

HEMI Enters BUSH, the Hungarian Showcase Conference

HEMI Enters BUSH, the Hungarian Showcase Conference

Budapest Showcase Hub is the first Hungarian showcase festival and conference, focusing on the Central Eastern European region, showcasing the best current artists and listing all the hot topics of the music industry. This year, irregularly, it’ll be a one-day-only hybrid event, on November 4th, but will still be international and reaching beyond the borders.

The organisers of BUSH have created an entertaining video series of 31 promising artists of the region, as traveling and gathering is highly limited due to the pandemic, so they cannot perform live as usual.

The trailer of the series is already available, while the full episodes will be launched at the start of the conference, on the 4th of November on BUSH’s YouTube channel, which will including some interesting trivia of the artists.

In the selection process the organisers, just as usual, asked for the support of a few hundred music professionals and associations, such as ETEP and INES.

The conference and mini-showcase will be held at the famous A38 Ship in Budapest. The conference program is focusing on this hectic year of COVID-19, on changes and challenges.

The first two panels will be powered by Hub for the Exchange of Music Innovation (HEMI), Co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

The first one, Young Indie Label Associations in Deep Water, will dig into what happened in the past couple of years to the young label associations of the region.

Then, Entrepreneurship in Music Business, aims to clear the picture around the self-releasing artists, music business education and programmes like HEMI Music Hub, Music Competence Centre or JUMP.

Further panels will be discussing the sector’s challenges and opportunities, and of course, a listening session is also a must!

After the conference, four very promising Hungarian acts will hit the stage:  IamSoyuz, Saya Noé, Mongooz and the Magnet and Törzs while, at the small stage, there will be an electronic TEB selection by Telekom Electronic Beats Showcase: Mennydörgő, Flanger Kids, Ben Leavez, Fausto Mercier, DJ Mesterháza and Normál Tamás.
